Advice For the Two-Week Wait

two-week wait, infertility, advice

The two-week wait or TWW is the time between your ovulation and when menstruation begins. This can be an emotionally difficult time for women who are trying to conceive. The struggle is real for many women during this period, which is why we created these tips for dealing with it. Above all, we hope it will reduce your stress and help you cope with the TWW anxiety.

Practicing Self Care

During fertility treatment cycles such as IVF, IUI, or home insemination, the two-week wait can be extremely daunting. As difficult as it may be, it is important to avoid googling your symptoms or taking early home pregnancy tests. Doing this can further increase your stress level and mislead you with inaccurate information.

To help make the time go by faster and lessen your anxiety, try to keep busy and practice self-care. Below are a few ways for you to nurture your body and reduce your stress.

  • Go for walks, try some yoga poses or do some stretching
  • Begin a new TV show or check out a book you've been wanting to read
  • Make dinner plans with your friends or set a date night with your partner
  • Take up a new hobby or investigate something that interests you

Hold Off on Taking a Pregnancy Test

It's normal to be impatient during these two weeks and you'll want to try to track your symptoms. However, most early pregnancy tests will only give you an accurate result a day or two before your missed period and even then you may not get an accurate result. Testing before the right time can give you a false negative which can result in frustration and even more stress.

The best option is to wait until your period is at least one day late to avoid unnecessary disappointment. If you have had a medicated IUI with a trigger shot, you should definitely prevent testing early because the trigger shot will provide a false positive on your pregnancy tests during those two weeks.

Create a Good Support System

Having someone to talk to when you are dealing with the two-week wait can help you feel less alone. This can be your partner, a friend, people you connect with through forums, support groups, or yes, even a therapist. Being able to talk about your feelings and emotions can make this difficult time a little bit easier.

Support groups are a great option because you can talk to people that are having or have had similar experiences and understand what you are going through. Consider joining our Facebook Group called Family Dreams – Cryos USA and have many friends to talk with along the way!
