Everything You Want to Know About Egg Freezing!

egg freezing / storing

Social egg freezing, also known as fertility preservation, is becoming a more common procedure for young women everywhere. Why you might ask? Looking at the facts, women's fertility begins to drop at the age of 31, and by age 40, a woman's odds of conceiving a baby are just 5% per cycle, on average. Unlike men, women are born with all the eggs they will ever have.

By planning ahead, a woman can preserve her younger eggs and have a better egg quality and quantity than she would if she chose to conceive later in life. This creates quite a bit of unnecessary pressure and stress for many women who would love to have a baby later in life, after finding Mr. Right or working to achieve specific professional goals.

How Does Fertility Preservation Work?

Cryos uses a process called vitrification to cryopreserve a women's eggs. In normal freezing ice crystals form that damage and/or kill the cells. The process of vitrification solves this by carefully placing cryoprotectants inside the egg and rapidly cooling them in liquid nitrogen to -196⁰C/-320⁰ F.

This “flash freezing” effect prevents the formation of ice crystals assuring that nearly 100% of the eggs survive the process. Once vitrified the eggs are stored in liquid nitrogen tanks and will potentially last forever.

Corey Burke, our Tissue Bank Director and Embryologist, has over 20 years of experience and takes extreme care and precaution in making sure each client’s eggs are properly handled and frozen to ensure the highest quality eggs.

Frozen eggs can be stored indefinitely. Live births have been reported using eggs that had been frozen for more than 10 years, so you should have plenty of time to build your family when it is right for you.
