7 reasons donor eggs are used
Who is a candidate for donor eggs? What are some of the reasons women use donor eggs? Listed below are some of the most common reasons women may need donor eggs.
Donor Eggs: Who Uses Them and Why?
According to WedMD, the use of donor eggs is becoming more common, especially among women over the age of 40. Couples who have trouble with their reproductive functions and who are not successful with procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may consider using donor eggs.
Being affected by one of these conditions or situations requires the use of donor eggs to have the family of your dreams:
1. Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)
POF is when menopause has started much earlier than usual. Early menopause prevents ovulation, and the ability to get pregnant without the use of donor eggs. Typically, Premature Ovarian Failure occurs before the age of 40, and can be experienced even by women in their early-20s.
2. Endometriosis
Endometriosis is caused when endometrial tissue, the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, starts to grow outside of the uterus blocking the Fallopian tubes. The blocked Fallopian tubes prevent the egg and sperm from meeting and therefore cause infertility or reduce the possibility of conceiving naturally.
Severe endometriosis can cause scarring of the ovaries and require the use of donor eggs to conceive.
3. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones. Ovaries may not develop a healthy egg or may not release the egg at all with this condition.
4. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
This is an infection of the uterus and Fallopian tubes due to chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trauma. It may cause scar tissue or abscesses in the Fallopian tubes that can damage reproductive organs and cause infertility.
5. Cancer Survivor
Women who have gone through the process of cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, are more likely to suffer from infertility. This could mean their eggs or reproductive organs are no longer able to conceive naturally.

6. Genetic disorders
Many women are unable to conceive due to genetic factors. Sometimes this is because of an inherited chromosome abnormality or a single gene defect that has been passed on from parent to child. To avoid passing on major genetic disorders/diseases, women may decide to use donor eggs.
7. Low Quality
If you are over 40, you may experience what is termed 'low quality' eggs. This diminished ovarian reserve often causes trouble conceiving.
