Once you have sent us your sperm donor application, one of the next steps is to decide whether you want to be a Non-ID Release or ID Release/Early ID Release Sperm Donor - in short, whether you want to let Cryos disclose your identifying information to future donor-conceived children or not. The choice is yours.
In addition, you need to decide whether you want a Basic or Extended Donor Profile, which is a question of how much information will be available on your Sperm Donor Profile. A Sperm Donor Profile is a presentation of each donor that others can use to ensure they find the right sperm donor to help them create the family they dream of.
If you choose to become a Non-ID Release donor, you are asked to have an Extended Profile. This means that you can choose from the following combinations:
- ID Release donor with a Basic Profile
- ID Release donor with an Extended Profile
- Early ID Release donor with a Basic Profile
- Early ID Release donor with an Extended Profile
- Non-ID Release donor with an Extended Profile
ID Release, Early ID Release or Non-ID Release
First, you must decide whether to be an ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release Sperm Donor. This is a question of whether you want to give any future children born with the help of your donations the possibility to try to contact you.
Being an ID Release Sperm Donor
As an ID Release Sperm Donor, you authorise Cryos to disclose identifying information about you to children born from your donations. The identifying information (your name, date of birth, and address at the time of donation) will only be released upon request from the child and only when they have reached the age of 18. The child must also be able to prove that they were born with the help of your donations.
This way, the child can have the opportunity to try to contact their donor and learn more about their biological origins, which some people will appreciate. Of course, it is up to you what level of contact you want to engage in if a donor-conceived child contacts you.
In a few countries, children or their parents can enquire about certain information about you before the child turns 18. If you want to allow this, you will be asked to fill out separate consent forms for the countries in question.
Becoming an Early ID Release Sperm Donor
If you choose to become an Early ID Release Donor, you authorize Cryos to disclose your identifying information to parents who conceive a child using your donations, provided they can document this. The information may be disclosed upon request from the child’s birth until the child turns 18. After the age of 18, the information may only be disclosed to the child.
Being a Non-ID Release Sperm Donor
If you choose to be a Non-ID Release Sperm Donor, Cryos will never disclose identifying information to children, parents, or other third parties.
However, there is no guarantee that children or others will refrain from searching for your identity, for example through DNA testing or available online services in the future. However, we will always ask the families we are in contact with to respect your choice to remain anonymous.
Please note that Non-ID Release donors are asked to have an Extended Donor Profile.
The choice between being ID Release, Early ID Release or Non-ID Release
The decision whether to be an ID Release, Early ID Release or Non-ID Release Sperm Donor affects both you and any children born with the help of your donations. Once you have made your choice, it is not possible to change your decision in the future. As a result, we recommend that you take the time to consider what feels right for you.
The choice is yours, and it is important to us that you have all the information available before making the decision. Before reaching your decision, you can discuss your choice with our experienced donor coordinators.
As a sperm donor at Cryos, you agree not to contact potential donor-conceived children - regardless of whether you are an ID Release/Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release Donor.
You can read more about donor anonymity here.
You are protected against paternity
Whether you are ID Release/Early ID Release or Non-ID Release, the law ensures that you have no legal or moral obligations to the child. According to the Danish Children's Act, you will never be considered the legal father of children conceived with the help of your donations.
Who has access to the Sperm Donor Profiles?
All Sperm Donor Profiles are available online for women and couples considering using a sperm donor from Cryos. You need to create a user and login to access the donor profiles.
Regardless of your donor type and profile, your online donor profile will not contain your name, contact information, or other identifying information.
Basic or Extended Profile
In addition to your decision to be either an ID Release or Non-ID Release, you must also decide whether you want a Basic or Extended Profile. It is a question of the amount of information accessible on your donor profile.
For some, just knowing basic physical features is enough, while others prefer to have more personalised information about the donor they choose.
Basic Profile
A Basic Profile contains the following information, which is registered during the first clinical examination:
- Race
- Ethnicity
- Hair- and eye colour
- Height and weight
- Blood type
- Profession/Education
If you choose to have a Basic Profile, we will not ask you for any additional information for your donor profile.
Extended Profile
An Extended Profile contains much more information than the Basic Profile. As a result, you must provide us with different types of information to include in your profile:
- Questionnaire to the Extended Profile
- An Emotional Intelligence-test
- Photos of you as a child
- A handwritten letter to children born from your donations or their parents
- A voice recording where you read the letter out loud
The purpose of the Extended Profile is to give women and couples a better understanding of the woman behind the donations. It will help them in their search for a donor, if they prefer someone who matches their personality or if they are looking for someone with similar physical characteristics to theirs. An Extended Profile will also provide them with more information to share with their children if they have questions about their donor.
Choosing between a Basic and Extended Profile
It is up to you whether you want a Basic or Extended Profile. The Extended Profile requires you to spend a little extra time providing the data for your profile. If you choose to have an Extended Profile, you cannot change to a Basic Profile in the future (or vice versa).
Do you need help with your donor profile choices?
When you apply as a sperm donor, you will of course be guided through the different options before deciding on which donor type and profile you want. If you have any questions about the choices regarding your donor profile right now, you are welcome to contact us so we can help you.
How is the screening process, and what are the requirements to become a sperm donor?
Sperm donors undergo a thorough screening process before being accepted. This process includes, among other things, a test of your sperm quality, a physical examination, a genetic carrier test, and a review of your family’s health history.
