      Why become a sperm donor?

Through the years, thousands of men have donated their sperm at Cryos. Becoming a sperm donor is a decision that requires consideration, and learning about the reasons and experiences of other sperm donors might be a help for you. Read a few quotes from Cryos donors below or learn more about what our sperm donors say here.

Further below, we take a detailed look at our sperm donors’ main reasons for donating their sperm.

      1. Making a difference as a sperm donor

An important motivation factor for sperm donors is to help others. Many sperm donors have close friends or family who have had help to conceive or have children themselves and would like to assist others in experiencing the same joy.

The main groups of people you help as a sperm donor are:

      • Heterosexual couples where the male sperm quality is not good enough
      • Lesbian couples wishing to become mothers
      • Single women who have not found the right partner yet

Common to them all is a great desire to have a child, which is only possible with the help of a sperm donor. These families have lots of love to give but need healthy sperm to have the child they dream of.

In other words, there is no doubt that your help will be much appreciated. Read some of the thankful messages from people who conceived with help from a sperm donor here.

      2. Compensation for your time

Being a sperm donor requires that you attend appointments at one of our sperm bank locations during the screening and donation process. You will receive financial compensation for your time.

For a lot of sperm donors, the greatest reward is being able to help others. But we know that financial compensation is appreciated too. Learn more about sperm donor compensation here.

      3. Free and ongoing health checks

All people have medical conditions that we are not aware of, and to ensure that you are as healthy as possible, you will go through a screening process before being accepted as a Cryos donor. During this process, we will test your blood and urine for infectious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HTLV (human T-cell lymphotropic virus).

We also test for the most common genetic variants causing genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, hemoglobinopathies, spinal muscular atrophy and Tay Sachs disease. These are the most frequent serious hereditary diseases worldwide.

The genetic tests are only carried out once, while the test for infectious diseases is carried out every three months, as long as you are an active donor. This means you will receive ongoing checks for sexually transmitted diseases, which many of our donors appreciate.

      4. Sperm quality test

As a sperm donor, you will have your sperm quality tested both initially, when you have applied, and on an ongoing basis. If you wish, you can always be informed about the quality of your last sample when you visit us. In that way, you will be aware of your own fertility and the possibility to conceive, if you one day wish to become a father yourself. Learn more about sperm quality, how we test it, and how you can ensure a good sperm quality here.
