Sperm Donor Profiles and choices

When becoming a sperm donor at Cryos, there are a few choices you must make. Do you agree to let a person conceived with your sperm donations contact you in the future? And how much information will you provide for your Sperm Donor Profile? Learn about the options here.

After sending in your sperm donor application, one of the first steps in the process of becoming a sperm donor is to decide if you want to be a Non-ID Release, an ID Release, or an Early ID Release Sperm Donor, and whether you want a Basic or Extended Donor Profile. The choice is yours.

A Sperm Donor Profile is an online presentation of each donor, that helps people choose a sperm donor that feels right to them. Some people prefer to know as little as possible about the donor, while others prefer to get a sense of the person who helps them build the family they dream of, including his physical characteristics, personality traits, family medical history, and more. In general, ID Release/Early ID Release Donors with Extended Profiles are the popular choice among people using donor sperm from Cryos.

Becoming a Non-ID Release, ID Release, or an Early ID Release Sperm Donor

As a Cryos sperm donor, you will be asked whether you allow your identification to be released to donor-conceived children. Here we discuss the choice between becoming an ID Release/Early ID Release or a Non-ID Release sperm donor.

Being an ID Release Sperm Donor

As an ID Release sperm donor, future children born from your donations will be able to contact Cryos to receive identifying information (your name, date of birth, and your address at the time of donation) once they turn 18 years old in the U.S. In some countries, however, children or their parents can receive certain information about you as a donor before the child turns 18. We will ask you to fill out consent forms for different countries to allow this.

Being an ID Release Sperm Donor gives the child the option to know more about their own biological origin if they want to. Many donor-conceived people find importance and comfort in learning and perhaps connecting with their genetic roots, but the level of contact you want to engage in is always your choice.

If you are under the age of 25 and are considering becoming an ID Release Sperm Donor, one of our healthcare professionals will talk with you during the approval process to make sure you have fully considered your choice and understand the implications involved.

Becoming an Early ID Release Sperm Donor

If you choose to become an Early ID Release Donor, you authorise Cryos to disclose your identifying information to parents who conceive a child using your donations, provided they can document this. The information may be disclosed upon request from the birth of the child until the child turns 18. After the age of 18, the information may only be disclosed to the child.

Being a Non-ID Release Sperm Donor

Becoming a Non-ID Release sperm donor means your information will always be confidential and Cryos will never release your identity to children, parents, or other third parties at any time. Cryos values your anonymity, and in agreement, we ask that you refrain from contacting potential families or donor-conceived children.
While Cryos never releases your information as a Non-ID Release Sperm Donor, there is still a chance of being identified through familial DNA testing. Sperm contains DNA, and therefore, there will always be a chance that donors, clients, and donor-conceived persons can be found via a DNA analysis or genetic testing service. You and all donors should be aware that they could be found in the future through genetic testing.

Deciding between ID Release/Early ID Release or Non-ID Release

The choice between being an ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release donor has implications for both you and any children born with help from your donations. Once you make your decision, it is permanent. Therefore, we recommend you take your time now to determine the right choice for you.

      You are protected against paternity

Whether you choose to be a Non-ID Release or ID Release/Early ID Release sperm donor, you are protected against paternity claims, and you cannot be contacted for child support. You give up paternity rights when you become a registered donor at Cryos. This means that you will never be considered the legal father of potential donor children, who are born with the help of your donation.

Who can access the sperm donor profile?

All sperm donor profiles are available online in Cryos’ Sperm Donor Search, which is used by persons who are considering using donor sperm from Cryos. A login is required to access the donor profiles. Regardless of which type of donor you choose to be and which type of profile you decide to have, your online donor profile will not contain your name, contact information, or any other identifying information.

      Your Extended Sperm Donor Profile

After being approved as a sperm donor and deciding between being ID Release or Non-ID Release, it will be time to fill out your Extended Sperm Donor Profile.

This requires you to provide us with different information we can include in your profile:

      • An Extended Profile Questionnaire
      • An Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire
      • A handwritten message to children or future parents
      • A voice recording of you reading your handwritten message out loud
      • Child photos

The purpose of the Extended Donor Profile is to give future parents a better idea of the person behind the donations. This will help them find a donor that matches their personality or has physical traits like theirs. It will also provide them with more information to share with their children if they start asking questions about being donor-conceived.
