Once you have sent us your egg donor application, one of the next steps is to decide whether you want to be a Non-ID Release (also known as anonymous) or ID Release/Early ID Release (also known as open or non-anonymous) Egg Donor - in short, whether you want to give future donor-conceived children the opportunity to receive identifying information about you or not. The choice is yours.
In addition, you need to fill out your Egg Donor Profile. The profile is a presentation of you that others can use to ensure they find the right egg donor to help them create the family they dream of.
ID Release, Early ID Release or Non-ID Release
First, you must decide whether to be an ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release Egg Donor. This is a question of whether you want to give any future children born with the help of your donations the possibility to request access to your identifying information - and when.
Being an ID Release Egg Donor
As an ID Release Egg Donor, you authorise Cryos to disclose identifying information about you to children born from your donations. The identifying information (your name, date of birth, and address at the time of donation) will only be released upon request from the child and only when they have reached the age of 18. The child must also be able to prove that they were born with the help of your donations.
This way, the child can have the opportunity to try to contact their donor and learn more about their biological origins, which some people will appreciate. Of course, it is up to you what level of contact you want to engage in - if any - if a donor-conceived child contacts you.
Becoming an Early ID Release Egg Donor
If you choose to become an Early ID Release Donor, you authorize Cryos to disclose your identifying information to parents who conceive a child using your donations, provided they can document this. The information may be disclosed upon request from the child’s birth until the child turns 18. After the age of 18, the information may only be disclosed to the child.
Being a Non-ID Release Egg Donor
If you choose to be a Non-ID Release Egg Donor, Cryos will never disclose identifying information to children, parents, or other third parties.
However, there is no guarantee that children or others will refrain from searching for your identity, for example through DNA testing or available online services in the future. However, we will always ask the families we are in contact with to respect that you have chosen not to have your identity disclosed.
The choice between being ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release
The decision whether to be an ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release Egg Donor affects both you and any children born with the help of your donations. Once you have made your choice, it is not possible to change your decision in the future. As a result, we recommend that you take the time to consider what feels right for you.
The choice is yours, and it is important to us that you have all the information available before making the decision. Before reaching your decision, you can discuss your choice with our experienced donor coordinators.
As an egg donor at Cryos, you agree not to contact potential donor-conceived children - regardless of whether you are an ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release Donor.
You can read more about donor anonymity here.
You have no legal or moral obligations to the child
Whether you are ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release, the law ensures that you have no legal or moral obligations to the child. According to the Danish Children's Act, you will never be considered the legal mother of children conceived with your donations.
Who has access to the Egg Donor Profiles?
All Egg Donor Profiles are available online for women and couples considering using an egg donor from Cryos. You need to create a user and login to access the donor profiles.
Regardless of your donor type, your online donor profile will not contain your name, contact information, or other identifying information.
Your Extended Egg Donor Profile
When you have decided whether you want to be ID Release, Early ID Release, or Non-ID Release, it is time to fill out your Extended Egg Donor Profile. The profile will contain information about your physical characteristics and profession/education. In addition, you need to give us some different types of information to include in your profile:
- Questionnaire to the Extended Profile
- An Emotional Intelligence test
- Pictures of you as a child
- A handwritten letter to children born from your donations or their parents
- A voice recording where you read the letter out loud
The purpose of the Extended Profile is to give women and couples a better understanding of the woman behind the donations. It will help them in their search for a donor, if they prefer someone who matches their personality or if they are looking for someone with similar physical characteristics to theirs. An Extended Profile will also provide them with more information to share with their children if they have questions about their donor.
Do you have any questions or need help with your donor profile?
When you apply as an egg donor, we will off course guide you in filling out your donor profile, just as we will discuss the choice between ID Release, Early ID Release, and Non-ID Release with you. If you have any questions regarding your donor profile or your choice of donor type right now, you are welcome to contact us so we can help you.
