Our journey to a two-mom family
Starting a family is a deeply personal and transformative journey, filled with unique challenges and moments of joy. For Kira and her partner, their path to parenthood as a two-mom family was no different. With dreams of becoming mothers and a shared commitment to raising a child together, they set out on a journey that took many unexpected turns. Read how their journey unfolded and what they learned along the way.
Realizing that we were ready
"We always knew that we wanted to start a family together. One thing was certain right from the start: Kira wanted to get pregnant. However, our first taste of family life happened in a completely different way. We became an on-call foster family in 2019 and kept taking in babies who were in need.
When the last baby moved out after 4.5 months, we wanted to really enjoy our togetherness once again: We went travelling, out to eat, and nights away. We went on short weekend trips, visited friends and slept in. And yet we quickly realized: We are ready!
We want to start our journey to having children. The only question was: which path do we want to take?"

Choosing the right path
"Our first thought to take someone as a donor we know and that our child could get to know him from little on turned out very complicated... and now, looking back, we are very glad that we ended up taking a different path.
We turned to various fertility clinics and sperm banks. We wanted our gut to tell us: yes, this is the right place for you. And it actually happened so quickly (we could have started the next cycle) that we backed off and said we wanted to wait for our wedding in December 2020. But our longing grew and with it our impatience. Which is why we finally made our first attempt in November 2020. After all, who gets it right on the first try? It will certainly take a few attempts.
We decided against hormone treatment and in favour of insemination. And 2 weeks later we held the positive pregnancy test in our hands. What, that was it now? So easy and in a few months, we will be holding our baby in our arms? But fate did not make it quite that easy for us after all. Because in the seventh week, it was clear that we were expecting twins.
At first, it was a shock, but now they are our greatest happiness!"
